The scale of success achieved at the London 2012 Games has become clearer and more vivid over the past year, providing a new blueprint for the planning and delivery of major events worldwide. There has been much discussion about how London organizers were able to achieve such universally, highly regarded Games events and experiences, and why.
On October 22nd the Olympic Cauldron will be lit during the dedication of Jack Poole Plaza. While the flames have been ignited since the Games for Canada Day and a few other occasions, this celebration will commemorate the memory of Jack Poole, architect of Vancouver 2010, as the plaza has finally been completed. The ceremony will take place at 7:30pm and everyone is encouraged to bust out.
The Rio 2016 Olympics has brought about a twinge of nostalgia for many of us at Movement Strategies. We were heavily involved in planning and delivering the London 2012 Games between 2006 and the last day of the Paralympic Games, playing a significant role in the planning and design of the venues and infrastructure, event day operations and transport.
A prominent difference between the games were that the ancient Olympics were held in honour of the Greek god, Zeus, yet in the modern Olympics, compeititors compete in favour of reward and self-best. In modern Olympics, contestants are of both genders.
